Dr. Julia Burns has assisted children, adolescents and adults in a private practice setting for over twenty years. When answering the frequently asked question, "What ages do you see?" she responds, "I enjoy working with ages two to ninety-two."
She specializes in ADHD, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, Bipolar disorder, behavioral disruption and Pervasive Developmental Delay, including Autism and Asperger's. She enjoys working with therapists to provide medication management but she also sees patients for psychotherapy combined with medication as needed.
Background
Dr. Burns graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with Highest Honors, majoring in Psychology. She received her medical training at Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University. She completed her internship and residency at the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University. She obtained a child fellowship from the Virginia Treatment Center for Children. Her research at MCV reviewed correlations in pediatric mental illness in fraternal and identical twins through the Virginia Twin Registry. She also completed a forensic psychiatry program at the University of Virginia and received a certificate noting her interest and expertise. She has spent much time preparing and testifying in court regarding child maltreatment and has also served as a consulting psychiatrist to several colleges, including Colgate
College, Hamilton College and Utica College as well as Mohawk Valley
Community College.
Her tenure as Medical Director of the Residential Treatment Facility at The House of the Good Shepherd and psychiatrist for Kid's Oneida taught her well the resilience of the human spirit. Her practice and relationship with her patients reflects this belief.
